Sourdough Pizza: Our Friday Night Tradition

Last week’s post was pretty long, so I thought I’d keep this week’s a little more brief and share about our Friday night tradition–sourdough pizza! Making homemade pizza on Friday nights has been a tradition for us off and on over the past few years. I got out of the habit of making it while pregnant two years ago, but sometime last year we decided to bring it back. It makes meal planning just a little easier for me if I always know I can automatically plug in sourdough pizza for Friday night every week.

I used to make my pizza dough with yeast, but since getting started with sourdough in 2020 like everyone else did, I’ve been making sourdough pizza dough instead. I love the extra flavor it brings to the crust! Here’s a link to the sourdough crust recipe I always use. I split the dough into halves and freeze one half to use the following week. One half of the dough is enough for a large pizza for my husband, our one year old, and me to share.

I like to use the Lodge cast iron pizza pan to get the crust on our sourdough pizza nice and crisp on the bottom. I preheat the oven and the pan itself to 500 F for about 30 minutes, then I take the pan out of the oven, spread my pizza dough onto it, top, and pop it back in the oven for 14 to 15 minutes!

We like to change up the toppings every week, but we typically use fresh mozzarella and the same pizza sauce each time. I’ll share my basic pizza sauce recipe at the end of this post. Our favorite pizza topping combination is fresh pineapple, bacon, onion, and pickled jalapeno! The sourdough pizza in the photos of this post has green olives, onions, and fresh oregano leaves from that week’s CSA box. I think this week we’re going to change things up by using pesto instead of tomato sauce and topping with mozzarella and some fresh tomatoes from our friends’ garden.

Sourdough pizza has been such a fun little Friday night tradition for our family so far, and I think it could be a family favorite for years to come. Right now our Friday night looks like getting our son in bed after dinner and then my husband and I watching TV and having some kind of dessert. (Last week we had these delicious M&M Cookies from Amanda Frederickson.) I think in the future with older kids it would be so fun for everyone to create their own pizza and then have family movie night on Fridays!
